It was a day to remember for the Roscommon and District Youth Schoolboys League U12 team on Sunday when they booked their place in the Connacht SFAI Subway Plate Final.

Up against Galway in Eamonn Deacy Park, the young Roscommon sharp-shooters put on a stellar performance to run out 4-1 winners.

The homeside began on the attack, but when Ballymoe FC’s Eoghan Murray turned over possession in the Galway half, he burst forward before firing low into the net.

Ruairi Kilcline then made it 2-0, with the St Johns Athletic player pouncing on a loose ball before converting from close-range.

Roscommon continued to press as their confidence grew, but Galway hit back just before the interval thanks to Moyne Villa’s Robbie Hughes.

After the restart the homeside again looked to get on the attack, and the likes of Charlie Cox of Salthill Devon and Colm Whelan of Maree Oranmore showed great skill as they went in search of an equaliser.

However, that left room for Roscommon who punished their opponents with another two goals.

Roscommon Town’s John McGuinness used his pace to break free from the Galway defence, and, under pressure, he fired low into the net.

Kilcline then bagged his second when he was on his toes to react quickest after Cormac Beattie’s powerful strike had been saved.

RDYSL now face Athlone in the Connacht SFAI Subway Plate Final, with that game set to take place next Friday in Abbeycartron.
