Jamie Mulkearns was the toast of the Midlands on Sunday when the young goalkeeper pulled off a host of fine saves, including a penalty stop, to clinch the U15 Leinster SFAI Subway Plate against Wexford.

Travelling to the home of Curracloe United, Ray Ryan’s team had to dig deep at times as Wexford went for broke in extra-time.

The likes of Dylan McEvoy and Aaron Roche both had opportunities to steal the win at the end for the homeside, but a mix of solid defending and good goalkeeping ensured the Midlands will now face Waterford in the National semi-final.

The game itself was one of few real chances in the first 70 minutes, with both defences coming out on top as the pressure grew on the young players vying for the Leinster title.

Mulkearns was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the first half, saving tame efforts on his goal from Brendan Tobin and Kyle Clancey.

Peter Pierson engineered the first opening for the Midlands, sending a teasing cross to the back post where Cian Forde came within inches of steering the ball into the net.

Mulkearns then punched clear Kyle Kenny’s cross from a corner-kick, and Tobin stepped up to hit the loose ball, but skewed it over the crossbar.

The second half was another tight one, with James Cullen leading the Wexford midfield, and he battled hard against Cian Forde for dominance in the centre of the pitch.

Kai Hote’s last-ditch tackle for the Midlands was one of the standout moments, with the defender denying Dylan McEvoy what would have surely been a goal.

Midlands’ Ross Clinton went down in the penalty area under a challenge soon after that, but the referee waved away his appeals.

In extra-time, McEvoy continued to terrorise the visiting defence, and when he rounded Mulkearns his shot looked to be going in but hit the side-netting.

Mulkearns then forced Aaron Roche’s shot from close-range onto the post before penalties were required, and some more heroics from the goalkeeper meant Midlands were the team celebrating at the end.
