Lee Barr and Caolin McColgan scored the all-important goals for Quigley Point Swifts against Macroom in the U16 SFAI Skechers National Cup to see them through to the last 16.

Having made one of the longest trips of the weekend, the Donegal side returned home knowing they will face the winners of the game between Ratoath Harps and North End United.

Swifts started the tie on Sunday with Darragh McIntyre testing Peter Murphy in the home goal.

Ronan Lafferty then forced the Macroom goalkeeper into another smart save, before Caolin McColgan fired over the bar for the visitors.

With 20 minutes played, Swifts finally opened their account when McIntyre’s cross was headed in by Barr.

Both Daniel Cotter and JK Long had chances to equalise after that, but neither could hit the back of the net, and just before the interval Swifts doubled their advantage.

Ronan Lafferty played in McColgan, and he dispatched his shot with precision to leave the homeside trailing by two at the break.

In the second half Cotter went close again for Macroom, and on 45 minutes they pulled a goal back when Patrick Barry hit the top corner from 25-yards.

The latter stages of the tie were frantic, but Quigley Point Swifts held on for a place in the last 16.
