It was a mixed weekend for the Tipperary South Schoolboys and District League in the SFAI Subway Championship, with the U12s winning and the U13s losing out 2-0 to Cork.

For the U12 side, it was their first outing in the competition and young goalkeeper, Peter Boland was in fine form, saving several shots early on.

Billy Tierney at the core of the South Tipp’ defence was another who played well, while Artem Izhko and Shane O’Grady up front proved to be a useful pairing.

With no score at the break, and with little separating the two teams, it was left to Dominik Mendel to break the deadlock with a spectacular effort.

Finn Jones was the engineer of the goal, crafting the perfect cross for Mendel to catch on the volley and send flying into the net.

A strong reaction from Cork, who were excellent all afternoon, forced the South Tipp youngsters to battle hard, but they remained resolute and emerged as the winners.

Elsehwere, the South Tipp’ U13 team went down 2-0 to Cork in their SFAI Subway Championship clash in Carrigaline.

Although playing very well throughout, it was Cork who had the upper-hand for much of the tie, with Dylan Morrissey the busier of the two goalkeepers.

That being said, the final result could have been very different had Senan Butler converted when he faced himself one-on-one with the Cork goalkeeper.

However, his well-struck shot was saved, and from there Cork put the tie to bed with a second goal.
